LIKE....INNIT??

Since we arrived here in Canada and taking to people. I have noticed that virtually every sentence is unecessarily contaminated with the word LIKE....Virtually every 5th word is LIKE.

For example...

'I was in the Mal today LIKE and as I was looking at Starbucks menu LIKE and this woman came up to me LIKE....'

Well you get the picture....but my question is, who was the first person to start doing it?

Was it some famous Actor, or Rock legend that the young people followed and it spread like a virus on our English language from there???
